Looking back
An extraordinary journey over 12 years led to this offering of world-class implant dentistry being a possibility on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Everything changed for Dr. Thinus van Niekerk in 2012 after he travelled to Switzerland to visit the home of dental implantology® - Straumann Group. It was at the University of Bern where he met with the ‘Godfather of modern implant dentistry’, Professor Danny Buser. Thinus saw that things were done differently in Europe through a more conservative and precise approach.
He completed courses in Advanced Implant Dentistry under Prof Pietursson in Iceland, a Straumann ProArch accreditation under Prof Caramés in Portugal and a Neodent NeoArch accreditation with Ilapeo in Brazil. Thinus has since been a long-standing member of the International Team for Implantology, upholding its stringent philosophy on due diligence.
Underpinning this all is his unwavering passion for Implant Dentistry. Very early on, he affirmed that his two main goals were to bring world-class dentistry to his local community and to build a team that he could support with the best tools in the industry in order to deliver their best work.
To the future
To 100% deliver to both his business and family and ensure the vital one-on-one relationships built with long-standing patients were protected, Thinus sold his shares in two out of four practices and retained full ownership of the Ballito and Umhlanga branches on the North Coast. This ushered in a new era under the identity of Arch Dentistry.
The model had shifted to one in which professional colleagues work together to provide the best possible collective care under one roof. Dentistry is personal and at the heart of the practice is a team of trusted practitioners with a passion and commitment to serving the dental needs of our patients.
The Arch
Representing the configuration and alignment of teeth within the dental arch, the arch is also one of the strongest building forms in structural engineering and architecture. It is the perfect illustration of a strong team - each brick or stone doing its job to support the others, becoming an interdependent entity with the collective ability to meet extreme pressure with precision and accuracy.
Of the new name, Dr. van Niekerk says “We feel like the new name is a better description of who we’ve grown into and the direction we’re taking. The brand will forever uphold the ethos and the principles we set in place from day one. That’s not going to change.”

Thinus explains this as starting from a position of health in assessing patients’ needs:
